#SoberOctober & The 5 Steps of Self-Reg

I was only about one week into #soberoctober when I realized that I was using a self-control lens instead of a self-reg lens to think about my behaviour. This “aha!” moment changed everything and I began to look at my behaviour with soft eyes. By using the 5 steps of Shanker Self-Reg, my alcohol free journey was less stressful and more successful.

Thank you for sharing this personal experience. It is so hard to be kind to ourselves and I love that you were able to use soft eyes and really detect the why of your maladaptive behaviours. Any habit is hard to quit and you were not only successful, you lead a group and helped many people on their journey while keeping yourself accountable. Great use of the 5 steps! You need to give yourself a big hug and be proud! :)

I totally agree, Jennie! Not being a drinker, I can’t necessarily apply these steps to a #DryJanuary or #SoberOctober experience or something equivalent, but we all have our habits to change. This makes me wonder if we need to view more of the experiences or choices in our lives through a Self-Reg lens. It also makes me think about how I’ve had a self-control mindset more than I wish I did. Anyone else?
